As we approach the year 2012, the rumors about what will happen with the world and the human civilization in the date of 21.12.2012 have increased, especially by those who like to let their imagination and thinking to analyze, interpret and develop different predictions.
And although the most popular prophecy for this year is about the Mayan calendar, there are others quite strange.
1. The end of the Mayan Calendar
Although there are many theories about the Apocalypse, one of the best known is about the Mayan calendar. Many people wonder if, according to the presumed predictions based on this calendar, the world will end on 21.12.2012, more precise at winter solstice.
The strange thing in this prediction is how people distorted the information’s in the calendar. The Mayans actually used more complex calendars, each with a different purpose. This specific calendar was developed to measure the time, exactly the same as other calendars, only that this one involves a single cycle of 1,872,000 days, which will end on December 21 next year. This period is known as the Great Cycle, but for Mayans the end for such a cycle represents a reason for joy and celebration, not fear.
Some theories even claim that the Mayans were able to make astrological predictions, and according to them the beginning of the winter solstice will coincide with the moment when all the planets in our solar system will align with the Sun. But nobody can say exactly what impact this alignment will have on our planet Earth, many astronomers say it cannot be accurately estimated when this phenomenon will occur.
2. The collision between planet X and Earth
It is assumed that this planet known as Nibiru, was recently discovered by the Sumerians and that it was photographed by Russian researchers. Conspiracy theories say that this planet will collide with the Earth on 21.12.2012. The prediction related to the moment of impact has initially made reference to May of 2003, but because nothing happened then, now it is supposed that the collision will take place on December 21, 2012.
This alarmist information started from the site – ZetaTalk, founded by Nancy Lieder – who announced this prophecy, after which several sites have taken and published this information. The experts from NASA denied the existence of such planets, claiming that the collision theory is a hoax circulating on the Internet.
3. The reversal of the magnetic poles
Although it sounds strange, this phenomenon might happen, only that the information related to it has been so much distorted by conspiracy theories that it began to look like an apocalyptic scenario.
The Earth’s magnetic field isn’t constantly, during the last century when researchers began to study more closely the Earth’s polarity, the exact location of the poles has changed each year by 10 to 40 km. And, at some point, their reversal can occur, as it happened before, but rarely though our Earth’s history (the last reversal of the Earth’s magnetic poles occurred 780,000 years ago).
Some alarmist sites have linked somehow the so-called “pole reversal” with a shift in the Earth’s rotation. In addition, conspiracy theories say that this will happen in 2012 (21 December), and more catastrophes will strike the planet. But, according to experts, it is not possible to accurately estimate the date when the pole’s shift will occur. Moreover, they say, it is impossible for the Earth to change its spinning direction.
4. Strong solar eruptions
This is another phenomenon that feeds the apocalyptical rumors. The concerns related to the fact that in 2012 the Sun will reach the top of an 11th-year cycle, called solar maximum. According to the same conspiracy theories, when this peak will be reached, there will be solar eruptions that will cause an unprecedented disaster. But, according to the estimations of the experts, these strong solar eruptions will occur somewhere between 2012 and 2014, anyway these eruptions have occurred many times before, since the cycle is 11 years and the worst that could happen is to disrupt the satellite communications.
